In 2014 under his coaching Chhattisgarh female senior team won their first ever gold medal in National Basketball Tournament. Rajesh Patel was born in Indore (Madhya Pradesh) on 9th july 1956, at the age of 13 he started playing basketball . His coach Dr.J.M.Sharma recognizes the talent and passion within Mr.Patel and gave him the best training possible including morally and financially .Mr. Patel was from lower middle class family , so it was difficult for him to afford basketball shoes or other accessories. He use to play basketball with the PT shoes. Later due of Mr.Patel’s hard work and dedication he got scholarship and at the age 18 he also got his college fees sponsored with scholarship because of his basketball talent.
In 1973, Mr.Patel got selected as one of the 16 player for All India Camp for national Team. He was rejected from getting into the final 12 with the reason that he lack in height. That was the moment he decided to become a coach and help other to achieve what he was not able to due to the height factor. In 1988 he has done his diploma in NIS(National Institute of Sports) and got gold medal in that. After that he came to Bhilai.
Mr.Patel has started his job in BSP (Bhilai Steel Plant) and also become coach for BSP team but due to some problems he has to leave the basketball coaching for BSP team from 1991 to 1995. In this period BSP has faced a serious downfall in basketball tournaments. BSP association again recall Mr.Patel to join as basketball coach. Mr.Patel was also promoted to L6 before joining as basketball coach.
After returning as coach from 1996 to 2017 Mr.Patel has earned 21 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze for Bhilai Steel Plant
The biggest achievement for Mr.Patel was in 2014 when his Chattisgarh senior girls team beats the dominating Indian Railways in the final of Senior Nationals, and it was the first time in history of basketball that Chhattisgarh Girls team won a Gold in National Tournament. After the victory over Indian Railways the news spread like fire and famous Indian Lara Dutta got intrested in knowing the story behind the victory of Chhattisgarh team. She got very Impressed and decided to make a film on Mr.Patel. Unfortunately Mr.Patel Died before the release of the movie.
Chhattisgarh government has dedicated an entire newly constructed basketball ground in the name of Mr.Patel. It was inaugurated by then Cheif Minister of Chhattisgarh Shri Bhupesh Bhaghel. The court is now headed by Rohit Patel who is the son of Mr.Patel .
